Board of Advisors
Enrique Leon, M.D., joined Bend Biomedical as an Advisor in 2023. He is a dedicated family physician and faculty member at Tacoma Family Medicine (TFM), part of MultiCare and the University of Washington Family Medicine Network. With a mission to educate future family physicians and medical students, Dr. Leon focuses on training professionals to serve in rural, urban, underserved, and international areas of high need. He has been with TFM for four years and serves as a Clinical Instructor at the University of Washington Medical School, where he emphasizes the importance of addressing social determinants of health in patient care.
Before his current role, Dr. Leon spent 12 years caring for underserved patients in the Latino community at the Community Health Care Eastside Tanbara office in the Salishan neighborhood of Tacoma. His approach to medicine is deeply influenced by principles of social justice and inter-denominational liberation theology. He is passionate about promoting work-life-family balance, preventing poverty, and fostering active learning through mentoring and problem-solving around health needs.
Born in Peru to American and Peruvian parents who met in the Peace Corps, Dr. Leon has a strong commitment to his roots. He has maintained connections and collaborations in Peru through family and volunteer medical education and service projects. His leadership roles have included serving on committees for the Washington Academy of Family Physicians and the Peruvian-American Medical Society, among others, showcasing his dedication to public health and community service.
Dr. Leon’s educational journey began in Maryland public schools, leading to a Bachelor of Science in Biology from James Madison University in Virginia. He earned his medical degree from Howard University and completed his residency at Swedish Medical Center in Seattle. Dr. Leon is married with two children and enjoys outdoor activities with his family, including camping, hiking, fishing, and skiing. At home, they cherish moments spent dancing, cooking, and sharing jokes, fostering a joyful family environment.
