Charles (Chad) Emery, Ph.D., M.B.A., joined the Bend Biomedical Board of Advisors in 2024, bringing decades of experience in medical device innovation and a strong interest in global health. Charles is a strategic leader in product development and engineering, with a focus on advancing cutting-edge healthcare technologies to improve patient outcomes. He currently serves as Senior Engineering Director at Sciton, a leading medical device company and Vice President of Product Development and Innovation at Emery Systems Engineering LLC, which he founded in 2020.

Charles’s career spans over 25 years in healthcare innovation. At Siemens Medical Solutions, he held roles as Senior Acoustic Engineer and Staff Project Engineer, where he pioneered ultrasound technologies that enhanced diagnostic confidence and improved clinical workflows. As Vice-President of Product Development and Chief Innovation Officer at Ulthera, Charles led the development of advanced medical device solutions in aesthetics. His technical expertise and entrepreneurial mindset have consistently driven impactful projects in diagnostics and therapy. He holds over fifty patents.

A lifelong learner, Charles holds a Ph.D. in Biomedical Engineering from Duke University, where his research focused on improving the signal-to-noise ratio of transducer arrays for medical ultrasound. He also earned dual bachelor’s degrees in Electrical Engineering and Physics from Washington University in St. Louis, graduating summa cum laude and first in his class. Furthering his leadership credentials, He completed an MBA in Technology Management at the UW Foster School of Business. He has supplemented his education with executive certificates in Disruptive Strategy, and Innovation from Harvard Business School Online and the Jack Welch Management Institute. He is currently in the University of Texas-Austin Artificial Intelligence and Machine Learning Post Graduate Program.

His commitment to advancing healthcare innovation extends beyond his professional roles. He is passionate about using his expertise to address both local and global health challenges, aligning closely with Bend Biomedical’s mission to deliver high-quality, accessible medicines to underserved populations. These key leadership and strategic vision characteristics make him an invaluable advisor as Bend Biomedical develops impactful solutions for low- and middle-income countries.

Outside of his professional pursuits, Charles remains active through volunteering, reading, and cycling. He is also a dedicated husband and father.
