Kim Cummings, M.D.

Board of Advisors

Dr. Cummings joined the Bend Biomedical Board of Advisors in 2023. Kim holds an M.D. from Oregon Health & Science University and an undergraduate degree from Linfield College. She did her residency in pediatrics at Loma Linda University Health Education Consortium in Loma Linda, California. She is certified by the American Board of Pediatrics.

She has volunteered for Northwest Medical Teams in San Pedro Cholula, Oaxaca, Mexico. In this, one of the poorest areas of rural southern Mexico, open fires are still used inside homes for cooking and heating. Carbon monoxide and other pollutants from these fires have serious health consequences for adults and especially for children. The mission--to build stoves for the villagers' homes-- taught Kim that interventions do not always have to be high-tech and that a little prevention is better than efforts to cure those living in an unhealthy environment.

Kim has worked with children facing cancer, heart disease, kidney disease, metabolic disorders, and, sadly, some with likely preventable problems brought about by poor prenatal care. The most difficult times are spent with patients suffering from severe illnesses. These children endure pain, fear, and exhaustion; yet engage life with courage, hope, and generosity.  Spending time with them, acknowledging their bravery while facing overwhelming odds, and seeing them smile despite it all, assures Kim that her dedication to medicine, in the U.S. and globally, has been worth it.

Dr. Cummings enjoys participating in the full lifecycle of evidence-based medicine, and sharing how the current best evidence should always be used in decision-making.
